AI is inevitable. It is becoming more and more pronounced as we witness new Gen AI advancements, progress in ML models and innovations in AI-centric hardware. Everything in the business and technology world is adapting itself to the power and impact of AI. Digital leaders, all over the world, are evolving fast in tapping this phenomenon with the right strategy, investments and tools they can find.
But a recent IMF report reminds us of some easily-forgotten dangers. No, this one is not about how AI can abet discrimination, propagate bias or tweak the truth. This is about how the real bounties of AI will low towards the ones who already pack advantages like wealth, skills and economics. Those who fall behind in skills or are stuck in low-income regions or are doing low-bracket jobs will be the ones who will be wrestling with the is advantages of AI.
The rich (in terms of skills and economic strengths both) will get richer- again. The good-old Matthew Effect!
Think about it. IMF’s findings show that almost 40 per cent of global employment is exposed to AI. For advanced economies, the number rises to 60 per cent when we look at jobs that would have any impact from AI. Bu what’s interesting to note here is that almost half of these jobs will enjoy better productivity. They will reap an AI advantage.
If we move the lens on 125 countries, through IMF’s AI Preparedness Index, and look at low-income and high-income regions; we would easily spot how advanced nations with more wealth and skills are better equipped to adopt AI.

Those who are good at digital skills will find AI as a friend. Those who are poor, will accumulate more disadvantages.
As future-smart and responsible digital leaders, it is our privilege as well as duty to ensure that India stands at a vantage point here. With apt and time-to-time trainings, skill-building and upskilling; we have to step higher on AI Preparedness.
This way or that way, AI is coming. Do we get on the bus or be thrown under it- that’s up to us. On our digital maturity and readiness. Let’s strap ourselves well.
